Rohit Singla
MD/PhD Trainee
Faculty of Medicine
Rohit is an MD/PhD student in Biomedical Engineering and a Vanier Scholar at UBC. Supervised by Prof. Rob Rohling and Dr. Chris Nguan, he completed his PhD (Biomedical Eng.), received a MASc (Biomedical Eng.) and a BASc (Computer Eng.) all at UBC. He has currently returned to clinical training.
In his Ph.D research, Rohit explores the development of intelligent kidney ultrasound. This involves the creation of several computer-assisted tools and systems in order to detect and diagnosis kidney disease at its earliest stages. He asks questions such as "how do we automatically detect the kidney in ultrasound?", "how do ultrasound-based parameters change as kidney disease changes?", and "how can we non-invasively quantify microstructural changes of the kidney using ultrasound?". These questions, when applied to chronic kidney disease and kidney transplantation, may improve clinical pathways.
Beyond his thesis, Rohit has a broad range of research interests. These include ultrasound, medical artificial intelligence, chronic diseases, image processing/computer vision, and equity/fairness.
Outside of academia, Rohit maintains a breadth of activities centered around student advocacy and scientific communication. For fun, he enjoys having strong opinions about film, football, and food.
