DE-MYSTIFYING AI IN HEALTHCARE

On June 23rd to 26th, 2025, we successfully held the "Demystifying AI in Healthcare" professional development course, at the United in Diversity (UID) Bali Campus.

This four-day in-person program was a collaborative effort by United in Diversity (UID), the University of British Columbia (UBC)'s Data Science and Health Research Cluster (DASH), Data Science Institute (DSI), and IPMS (Indonesian Postgraduate Medical School). Designed for healthcare professionals, leaders, and researchers in Indonesia with no prior programming background, the course aimed to bridge the growing data literacy gap and empower participants to harness the transformative power of AI in medicine.

Participants engaged in a dynamic curriculum, featuring expert-led lectures from UBC including Dr. Anita Palepu, Head of the Department of Medicine and Co-Lead of the Data Science and Health (DASH) Cluster, and Dr. Raymond Ng, Director of the Data Science Institute (DSI). Each day, participants received a combination of expert-led lectures and applied their learnings through hands-on assignments using real clinical datasets, facilitated by Dr. Robert Bergen, data scientist at DSI and Saffrin Granby, data scientist at Vancouver Coastal Health.

This program has empowered Indonesian healthcare professionals with the confidence and capabilities to lead AI integration in health systems, ultimately contributing to improved health outcomes at both individual and national levels.

Curriculum Overview for Demystifying AI in Healthcare

Here’s what the learners had to say:

“It is a very important program because there’s so much written now about Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, which is a subset of AI. And there’s so much written that’s confusing and quite frankly promising too much and it’s a little bit overwhelming - so it is very important to take a step back and to realize the data analytics and digital sciences offer us very productive and powerful tools that if we use wisely find benefits for everyone in Indonesia, in fact, globally.”

  • Sir Gordon Duff, Director of UID Health and Honorary President of United in Diversity

“If I were to draft regulations, I could definitely apply the knowledge gained from this course. It has provided valuable perspectives that would help ensure our regulations are both safe and practical for everyday use in healthcare settings. Overall, the course is highly relevant to my work at the Ministry of Health."

  • Armaji Kamaludi Syarif, Deputy Director for Health Information System Policy and Strategy, Ministry of Health Republic of Indonesia

We are grateful to all participants and partners and look forward to future collaborations.
